Brainy Quote

I was tasked with bringing a quote to life through animation and expand the understanding of the original quote.  The spoken word gives us a unique glimpse into the historic, political, and cultural history of the world we share. So the visuals represented must be a faithful representation of the quote chosen.

the quote.

"From my rotting body, flowers shall grow, I am in them and that is eternity."

- Edvard Munch

This direction takes the visuals more literally and was ultimately chosen for me to move on with since it matches the tone of the quote. The painterly effect was done not only as a stylistic choice but it was done to play on the idea of merging forms. The effect helps blend the human form and plant life.

This direction relies on type and subtle supporting visuals to enhance the quotes meaning. Different anatomical structures would break down and build into new shapes ultimately supporting the type.

color adjustment

The adjustment of the color was made to push visual interest and contrast within the piece. The colors are rendered in a bolder manner after switching from a desaturated sepia palette.

final frames

eb synth

The use of Eb Synth was very important to completing this project. It is an AI-style transfer tool used to transfer the painted frame onto the final animation. of course this isn't a perfect solution there is a bit of manual cel animation to get the piece to feel alive.

compositing

Post processing was a large part of getting this project to it's final look. I used both Nuke and After Effects for compositing. Using Nuke to animate the lights, convert the color spaces from ACES to SRGB. And After Effects for final color adjustment and timing.

Nuke was a huge help for this project. In Redshift for C4D, there is no way to export a post-processing pass. So recreating them in Nuke to react to the lighting passes themselves was very important for the final to be achieved.
